Woman claims she was forced to flush emotional support animal at airline

Belen Aldecosea was just trying to return home to Florida with her pet hamster to deal with a medical issue but she says conflicting information from Spirit Airlines led her to flush the emotional support animal down an airport toilet

She says the airline representative suggested flushing Pebbles down an airport toilet and would not allow her to fly with her pet.

She says she did flush Pebbles, after running out of other options. According to the Miami Herald, a woman flushed her "emotional support hamster" down the loo at the airport after she was told that the animal would not be permitted to fly.

When she arrived at Baltimore-Washington International Airport in late November, the airline wouldn't let her bring Pebbles with her on board. Spirit denies that a staff member every told her to flush Pebbles.

After the November 10 incident, Aldecosea emailed Spirit Airlines to complain, and was offered a voucher for a free flight to selected USA cities. But Aldecosea contends she had no one available to help, and an employee suggested she release the hamster outside or flush it down a toilet.

The news comes as airlines are introducing stricter rules for emotional support animals after crew and passengers complained about allergies, soiled cabins and biting.

Aldecosea said her doctor certified her hamster as an emotional support animal and she had the certificate with her to prove the authenticity of it. He adds that the representative might have mistakenly given Belen the permission to fly with her hamster and that the representative "unfortunately, did misinform the guest".

Why the sudden act of animal cruelty towards an animal she specifically brought to the airport for its emotional significance?

US Gov't Shuts Down Again as Congress Misses Deadline
Paul refused to allow that to happen, upset that an amendment of his to restore budget caps was not being put up for a vote. Earlier, the White House told U.S. government agencies to prepare for a shutdown after a budget deal ran into opposition.

She shared her tale with newspaper after the story of an emotional support peacock - denied entrance to a United Airlines flight - went viral on the Internet. "I sat there for a good 10 minutes crying in the stall".

Spirit reportedly refused to let Aldecosea board the plane with Pebbles.

Aldecosea said she felt like she chose the right option at the time because she needed to get home and she didn't want the hamster to freeze to death and be on its own.

Having failed to rent a auto to embark on a day-long drive down America's east coast, she opted for the flushing option. She was told she was no longer allowed to bring him. She said she was also told the hamster, sitting in a cage which fit regulations for carry-on luggage, could not go in a cargo hold either.

Aldecosea's lawyer, Adam Goodman, sees the cases very differently however.

"Hamsters are welcome in our checkpoint", the agency said in a statement.

The Transport Safety Administration permits hamsters on board in principle but it's up to airlines whether they allow the animals on aircraft. While many airlines allow dogs and cats, major airlines like United, Delta, and American do not allow rodents for safety and health reasons.
