Intel drones stole the show at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

Winter Olympics 2018 PyeongChang Day 1 live updates schedule highlights video

"The Olympics are a time when the sports and entertainment industries are buzzing with record-setting performances, so it was the flawless stage for Intel Shooting Star drones and our team to set their own kind of record", said Natalie Cheung, general manager of Intel's drone light show team. You can read an in-depth explanation of how Intel made everything work, setting a record for the "most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously", here.

"And while more drones does provide a broader canvas, it perhaps more importantly affords a better sense of depth".

"It's been exciting for us to partner with Intel on the Winter Olympics, as they continue to push the limits with their advanced drone light show technologies", said Sam Prosser, commercial director EMEA APAC Guinness World Records.

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games is being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9 to 25.

Angela Merkel Criticised By Own Party Over Coalition
Schulz's choice to step aside "deserves the highest respect and recognition", said Andrea Nahles, his likely successor as party chair.

There might be an asterisk in the record book, however: The show didn't actually take place at today's opening ceremony for the PyeongChang Olympics in South Korea.

And because the drones rely on lithium-ion batteries that don't always do well in the bitter cold during PyeongChang winters, Intel intc tested the drones in Finland to evaluate their performance under similar conditions.

Evans told USA TODAY that the International Olympic Committee requested they scale back the number of drones for the live drone light show, and Intel agreed.

Despite the complexity of their routines, all of the drones used during an air show are controlled by a single computer and one drone pilot on the ground, according to Intel. It features built-in LED lights able to create over 4 billion color combinations. The drone production included some other impressive sky Olympic themes animations including a moving snowboarder. The performance also surpassed the 300-drone salute that was pre-recorded with Lady Gaga for Super Bowl LI previous year.
