Premier League TV rights of over £4 billion keep Sky in control

Sky and BT to pay £4.464bn for Premier League football broadcast rights

Sky will continue to be the chief telecaster of Premier League football after their broadcasting rights were extended to 2022.

In total BT will show 32 Saturday games per season, down from 42 now, and will pay £295m per season, down from the £320m it agreed last time.

In the bidding process it was announced that no one broadcaster could have the rights to more than 148 live matches per season, so Sky Sports could take one of these remaining packages, whilst BT Sport could take both.

Having secured one package of 42 matches in the current deal, and the rights to all United Kingdom broadcasts of the Champions League, BT Sport said it had "remained financially disciplined" in the auction for the 2019-22 rights.

Although the deal for 2019-22 as it stands is down on the previous agreement, it still confirms the Premier League as the biggest money-spinner in the European leagues in terms of TV receipts - for example domestic rights for Spain's La Liga for the three seasons from 2016/17 were sold for 2.65 billion euros.

WIth the new rights holding, the company's flagship Sky Sports channel will offer viewers every first-pick weekend match, plus Saturday evening fixtures for the first time, all screened on a dedicated Premier League channel. That equates to savings of nearly 600 million pounds for the European pay TV giant while showing an additional two games a year from the league it helped to grow from its inception in 1992. Under the new deal it will pay £9.2m per game.

In other words, to get the same cash, the Premier League have given broadcasters and extra 32 (168 v 200) matches of the maximum 380 games per season.

Swansea streak reaches 9 with Burnley win
Victory over the Clarets moved Swansea up to 15th in the table and two points clear of the relegation places. Carvalhal, renowned for his colourful analogies, said: "We put all the meat on the fire to try to win".

And for the first time, Sky will televise Premier League games on Saturday nights, with a 7.45pm kick off time.

If the tech firms do jump in, there might be an opportunity for United Kingdom fans to watch at least some live games without paying BT or Sky.

"Retaining the bulk of English Premier League rights was key for Sky to maintain its premium position, but to do so and secure a lower outlay is a bonus", they said.

"The outcome so far of the auction will be relief for the..."

Stephen van Rooyen, Sky's UK Chief Executive, commented on coverage: "We continue to invest in content that our customers value and which complements our strategy to broaden our offer".

"We are extremely pleased that BT and Sky continue to view the Premier League and our clubs as such an important part of their offering", Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore said.

In addition to the remaining two United Kingdom packages to be decided, a further windfall will be expected when the overseas rights are sold.
