While it is unclear how the mid-sea squabble started, footage obtained by Australian radio station 3AWRadio shows security personnel scrambling to break up a crowd of people who were throwing punches and tackling passengers to the ground.

It is still unclear if the family will face any charges for the fight, though Marine Area Command officials are now investigating it.

Camera IconThe Carnival Legend has been on a 10-day journey to the South Pacific.

'He said, "Please Dad, please, call the Federal Police",' he added.

His son said "a lot of people are bleeding, a lot of people down".

Travelling with her partner and another couple, she said their group became targeted two days ago after one member accidentally brushed past a member of the "violent" family.

Carnival Cruise Line bosses say disembarking an unruly family from a cruise was their "last resort".

Trouble also erupted elsewhere on the ship over the 10-day cruise.

Scared parents described hiding in their cabins along with their children as the rolling brawls broke out on deck and in the entertainment areas of the ship.

Several guards and at least one staff member can be seen kicking a passenger while he is on the ground. When her husband told them to take the violence away from their kids, "five of them surrounded" him and "told us to watch our backs", she tells 3AW.

A spokesman said: "Safety is the number one priority for Carnival Cruise Line, we take a zero tolerance approach to excessive behaviour that affects other guests and we have acted accordingly on Carnival Legend".

The ship which is operated by Carnival Cruise Line has taken action by removing them from what is now being called "the cruise from hell" from other passengers.

David Barkho said his son George, who was on board the ship, phoned him and ask him to call the police.

"People are walking around with cut heads and hands, bandages everywhere", she said.

Another passenger told Nine News that the troublemakers had previously threatened to stab and throw people overboard.

'We are confident that this strong action has addressed the disruption on Carnival Legend and enabled our remaining guests to properly enjoy the closing stages of their cruise holiday.

"The ship's highly trained security staff have engaged with a small group of disruptive guests and ensured that they are fully aware of and are compliant with our zero tolerance policy".
