Low-fat diet as effective as low-carb for losing weight

The battle between low-fat and low-carb diets seems to be at a standstill.

After one year, both groups demonstrated significant weight loss even though they didn't worry about their calorie intake. This Stanford study looked at three specific genetic variants commonly utilized in nutrigenomic studies and known to be involved in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. I led with the comparison of low-fat and low-carb diets. "The study population is also unique in being very healthy, without comorbidity, and with access to high-quality food".

According to the DIETFITS (Diet Intervention Examining The Factors Interacting with Treatment Success) trial, weight loss after 12 months was similar between the diet types, with an average weight loss of 11.68 pounds for the healthy low-fat (HLF) diet and 12.23 pounds for the healthy low-carbohydrate group (HLC) (mean between-group difference, 1.54 pounds, 95% CI -0.44 to 3.53 pounds).

After two months, they gradually began to increase their daily carbohydrate or fat intake in small quantities to reach a sustainable balance. (0.7 kg) - the difference within each diet group was more varied and more interesting, Gardner said.

They found both groups lost weight equally well, averaging around 6kg.

Beyond calorie counting, the study contradicted the increasingly popular theory that diets should be catered to an individual's genetics.

Carbs fat or DNA what does weight loss actually depend

Considering some facilities have cashed in on DNA-based diets, the results are important in disproving the notion that DNA plays any significant role in how efficiently a person loses weight. For instance, it was proposed that people with greater insulin resistance may do better following a diet low in most carbohydrates because of the decreased demand on insulin.

Michela Vagnini, a nutritionist for Natures Plus, has advocated the support of a healthy balanced and nutritious diet for a healthy life. Perhaps, it could be explained by genotype patterns and baseline insulin levels, but Gardner and colleagues failed to make any association between these factors and the propensity to succeed on either diet.

The information about insulin secretion and genetic patterns having no effect is new and useful information, Dr. Apovian says; however, "the story is not over yet" on those points.

At the end of the study period, the researchers found varying results. Now, the popular message is "eat less carbs".

"On both sides, we heard from people who had lost the most weight that we had helped them change their relationship to food, and that now they were more thoughtful about how they ate", said Gardner. The group might have moderate weight loss, but the individuals in the group could see anything from extreme weight loss to weight gain. What might have worked differently for the more successful losers? Maybe we shouldn't be asking what's the best diet, but what's the best diet for whom?' They recommended generally healthy eating combined with an emphasis on either low-carb or low-fat diets. Rather, it has much more to do with behavior change: "mindfulness, putting the fork down, not eating in front of the screen, going to the farmer's market, cooking meals".

It's often considered common knowledge that in order to lose weight, you should start by reducing your calorie intake.
