Banking giant Barclays has swung to a bottom-line loss of almost £2 billion after a string of hefty charges including Donald Trump's corporate tax changes and a hit from the collapse of Carillion. Pre-tax profit, which stripped out some of the one-off charges, rose 10pc to £3.5bn, up from £3.2bn.

It was pushed into the red by £2.5 billion in previously-announced losses from the sale of Barclays Africa Group and a £901 million charge from the USA president's January 1 corporate tax changes, as well as a £127 million blow in the fourth quarter from failed outsourcing giant Carillion.

Barclays posted an underlying pre-tax profit of £3.5bn for 2017, up from £3.2bn in 2016.

It also booked an additional £240m provision relating to alleged foreign exchange manipulation.
