Shooting town hall: Rubio on the defensive on gun control

On Tuesday, a thousand high school students left class in order to march to Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School to protest gun violence, memorialize the victims of the recent school shooting, and push lawmakers for change. Teens at some schools called for a ban on the AR-15 and similar rifles among civilians, saying they should be reserved for military use.

After previous school shootings, many lawmakers have vowed and promised and pledged that this time things would be different.

"Why am I trying to prevent someone from having a gun by giving a gun to someone else?" the mother of two asked. This specific threat warning indicated that Cruz had both the intent and capability to conduct a school shooting, and yet the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not pass the information along either to its Miami field office or to local law enforcement authorities.

Florida's Republican state leaders announced Wednesday that they are moving ahead with a "sweeping" bill responding to last week's school shooting - but the measure will likely not include any restrictions on assault rifles. He had also been expelled from school for fighting with his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and was found to have ammunition in his backpack when it was searched after the fight. They have been moved by the videos and photos shared on social media from within Marjory Stoneman Douglas as the shooting unfolded and by the impassioned calls for action delivered by students after the violence. They may also increase funding for mental health programs and police officers assigned to schools and enact a waiting period for rifle purchases.

Geography played an important role.

Many lasted 17 minutes in honor of the 17 people killed one week earlier at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Violence targeting schools was rarely the result of a sudden or impulsive act.

"People that we elected, the people with power, are willing to listen to us".

In Parkland, the students were all in the same school and from the same community.

Many attackers felt bullied, persecuted or injured by others. What about the high-powered weapons that these shooters have access to?

"Developing the capacity to pick up on and evaluate available or knowable information that might indicate that there is a risk of a targeted school attack".

Moderated by Jake Tapper, the town hall featured so many compelling moments as students, teachers and parents pressed Florida Republican Sen.

Certainly, in some cases warnings have led to arrests that may well have prevented school shootings.

"Let me be clear, the presence of a weapon or a gun in school runs contrary to everything we are wired to do in education for children", Swift said.

Michelle Obama tweeted Wednesday that she thinks the Florida student movement is inspiring.

"Dear Congress, who will die next because of your lack of action?" Children grow up with guns in the family. Everyone agreed that such crimes were a awful problem, but they were just some of the many problems facing law enforcement agencies.

The suspect, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, is being held on 17 counts of murder and has admitted the attack. But she said she got a harsh warning from her principal when she went seeking his approval: "If you walk out, keep walking". The Safe School Initiative provides a great framework for understanding and addressing the issue, but no organization exists to implement it. "I can't get on a plane with a bottle of water, but we leave it, some animal could walk into a school and shoot our children". Such a center, staffed by a team of trained cross-functional specialists, could receive tips, share intelligence and help local authorities to conduct risk and threat assessments for potential school shooters, and to train educators and law enforcement. All that these policies did was create the illusion of school safety. A gunman killed at least five people in a small Northern California town on November 15, 2017, just days after a Texas church mass shooting which claimed 26 lives. Then the next tragedy starts the cycle again. A hopeful sign is that children are getting involved and speaking up after the Florida shooting.
