Shooting town hall: Rubio on the defensive on gun control

On Tuesday, a thousand high school students left class in order to march to Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School to protest gun violence, memorialize the victims of the recent school shooting, and push lawmakers for change. Teens at some schools called for a ban on the AR-15 and similar rifles among civilians, saying they should be reserved for military use.

After previous school shootings, many lawmakers have vowed and promised and pledged that this time things would be different.

"Why am I trying to prevent someone from having a gun by giving a gun to someone else?" the mother of two asked. This specific threat warning indicated that Cruz had both the intent and capability to conduct a school shooting, and yet the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not pass the information along either to its Miami field office or to local law enforcement authorities.

Florida's Republican state leaders announced Wednesday that they are moving ahead with a "sweeping" bill responding to last week's school shooting - but the measure will likely not include any restrictions on assault rifles. He had also been expelled from school for fighting with his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and was found to have ammunition in his backpack when it was searched after the fight. They have been moved by the videos and photos shared on social media from within Marjory Stoneman Douglas as the shooting unfolded and by the impassioned calls for action delivered by students after the violence. They may also increase funding for mental health programs and police officers assigned to schools and enact a waiting period for rifle purchases.

Geography played an important role.

Many lasted 17 minutes in honor of the 17 people killed one week earlier at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Violence targeting schools was rarely the result of a sudden or impulsive act.

"People that we elected, the people with power, are willing to listen to us".

In Parkland, the students were all in the same school and from the same community.

Certainly, in some cases warnings have led to arrests that may well have prevented school shootings.

"Let me be clear, the presence of a weapon or a gun in school runs contrary to everything we are wired to do in education for children", Swift said.

Then the next tragedy starts the cycle again. A hopeful sign is that children are getting involved and speaking up after the Florida shooting.
