ICE raids nab 150 in California after Oakland mayor's warning

Federal officials and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf traded bitter accusations Wednesday over Schaaf's decision to alert the public about a multiday Northern California immigration sweep that the Trump administration launched to counter local sanctuary laws.

"What she did is not better than a gang lookout yelling, 'police, ' when a police cruiser comes into a neighborhood of criminals except she did it to an entire community", Homan said.

- Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf did not back down from defending herself Wednesday, after she was criticized by the acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Immigrant communities are an integral part of our culture and our society, and they make up the heart and soul of our city", she added. ICE said about half have criminal convictions in addition to their immigration violation.

The warning "was meant to give all residents time to learn their rights and know their legal options", she said in a statement Tuesday night reported in the San Francisco Chronicle.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials asked Boston police to hold 68 immigrants for possible deportation a year ago, but the city department "did not directly transfer any of the suspects to ICE custody", the city's police commissioner said in a recent memo.

"It definitely had an impact on the family and I think intimidated them and the small children inside the home", Weiler said of the incident.

Homan blasted so-called sanctuary laws in San Francisco and Oakland, saying they endanger immigration officers who aren't allowed in jails and therefore must make more arrests in the community. Officers were able to effectively arrest 150 immigrants who remained undocumented according to CBS San Francisco.

Barnaby Joyce's sexual harassment accuser upset complaint now public
The Liberal leader holds government by a single lower house seat so can not govern without the support of the National Party. A spokesman said Mr Joyce had been made aware of the claim indirectly and believed it was " spurious and defamatory ".

ICE said some of the individuals arrested will face federal criminal prosecutions for illegal entry and illegal re-entry after deportation.

But ICE spokesman James Schwab said "this does not happen", referring to randomly asking individuals for documentation. The mayor said her information on the raid did not come from official channels and that given the same situation she would do it again.

Last week President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw immigration enforcement agencies from California, accusing the state of shielding "horrible criminals".

Schaaf had issued a warning on Saturday and held a press conference the following day, announcing that she had learned that ICE would conduct operations in the Bay Area. The petition calls for the city to extend a sanctuary policy that applies only to police to cover all city employees and officials; protect resident's personal information, including their sexual orientation and immigration status; and limit the city's communication and cooperation with immigration authorities and ICE. Jerry Brown down to local mayors have resisted a Trump administration immigration crackdown that they contend is arbitrarily hauling in otherwise law-abiding people and splitting up families that include us -born children.

This is the third operation of intimidation carried out by ICE during the last two months in California, after arresting more than 200 allegedly undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles in early February and harassing 122 businesses that may have employed undocumented citizens during the month of January.

Immigration lawyers at non-profits like the American Friends Service Committee and American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey have also seen an increase in arrests of undocumented immigrants with removal orders that come in for their routine check-ins with ICE.

"The release of criminal aliens back on Boston streets continues to pose a serious and risky risk to our communities", Brophy said.
