US Plans to Sell Antitank Missiles to Ukraine

Valery Sharifulin TASS

The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale of Javelin missiles and launch units to Ukraine at an estimated cost of $47 million, the Pentagon said on Thursday. Lawmakers from both parties have long pushed the government to provide the weapons. "The Javelin system will help Ukraine build its long-term defense capacity to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in order to meet its national defense requirements". The Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture would be the prime contractor on the sale. The missiles will come from existing U.S. Army stockpiles.

The proposed deal now heads to Congress, where it has a 30-day period in which it could be blocked. However, Republicans and Democrats alike have been calling for the sale of the anti-tank missiles and launchers for years. Until now, the United States has assisted Ukraine's military with logistics, intelligence, training and other types of support.

Barnaby Joyce's sexual harassment accuser upset complaint now public

"Ukraine will have no difficulty absorbing this system into its armed forces", the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, part of the USA military, said in a statement.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote this on his Facebook page on Friday. However, Russia countered that the sale would encourage supporters of the conflict to use force. The 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) approved increased U.S. military aid to Kiev, including lethal weapons.
