The Napa Valley Register reported the man was wearing body armour and reportedly armed with an automatic weapon.

Sources tell KTVU one of the remaining hostages is the executive director of The Pathway Home, which is a program that serves veterans. He spoke to her by phone. She is in the home's dining hall and not allowed to leave.

But Napa County Sheriff John Robertson told reporters that about 80 students were near the area where the hostages were taken but were never in danger. Investigators know who the gunman is and they know he is armed with a rifle.

At a brief news conference, patrol spokesman Sgt. Robert Nacke said he knew of no injuries. "There were many bullets fired".

California Highway Patrol have said they have officers on the scene and are attempting to "bring the situation to a safe conclusion". Hostage negotiators have not yet contacted the suspect.

The FBI is involved in the negotiation process.
