After a ferocious month-long government assault, thousands of rebel fighters and civilians were bussed out of the city's east.

"After the opening of an additional checkpoint in the direction of Jisrein-Mlekha area, the Syrian side has registered increased number of clashes between the civilians and the militants who are blocking the exits from the area", Zolotukhin told reporters.

The government, determined to wrest the eastern Ghouta suburbs from the control of rebels after seven years of war, has intensified the shelling and bombardment to clear the way for its troops to advance on the ground.
