DeVos' 60 Minutes Interview Is Not Going Over Well

US Education Secretary Betsy De Vos said she will chair a federal commission on school safety

Betsy DeVos, United States Secretary of Education, sat down for a 13-minute segment on 60 Minutes last night with correspondent Lesley Stahl.

According to a report by Education Trust-Midwest, schools in MI have experienced major declines in third-grade reading levels.

MI is the only state with a decline in third-grade math.

Since her CBS interview, DeVos has criticized 60 Minutes by going on Twitter, pointing to several charts and going on about the data "they didn't show you" during her interview.

Again asked point blank if the schools in MI, where DeVos hails from and has long advocated school choice, had improved, she said she did not know.

"Well, we should be funding and investing in students, not in school, school buildings, not in institutions, not in systems", said DeVos.

Betsy DeVos: Maybe I should. Yes. When asked if she sees disproportionate institutional racism in schools, DeVos answers that her department is "studying" the problem. She told Stahl that there have been no positive results from federal investments in public school, but her claim is simply incorrect. Research from Stanford University also found that teachers use harsher discipline on Black students when they misbehave a second time than they would for a white student.

Trump former strategist Steve Bannon addresses France's far-right party congress
Founded by Le Pen's father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, in the 1970s, the National Front plans to change its name via a vote on Sunday. He said that Bannon understood like Trump, Matteo Salvini and Marine Le Pen that people want to control their own destiny.

DeVos is just the latest member of Trump's Cabinet to come under scrutiny. DeVos responds that students "want a variety of things", that they "want solutions" instead of gun control specifically.

DeVos expounded during a March 12 appearance on Today, saying in reference to guns that "schools should have this tool", while noting that "we have to get much broader than talking about guns".

Stahl: The public schools here are doing worse than they did. It is unclear what Trump's own reaction to her interviews was, but officials in the West Wing said things went from bad to worse as DeVos continued her interviews. "If I had to answer every question she had about schools, I would have had to bone up on education for a month". If DeVos was coached to be as vague and non-specific in her answers as possible, she should get rid of the person giving her that advice. It dismissed a lot more cases as well, according to Politico.

Regarding charter schools in Detroit, CREDO says: "Charter students in the city of Detroit (27% of the state's charter students), are performing even better than their peers in the rest of the state, on average gaining almost three months achievement for each year they attend charter schools". And no amount of preparation could change the fact that her arguments in favor of school choice are complete nonsense. Meanwhile, federal education programmes face steep cuts. They asserted that at least one-third of such shootings could be prevented by more responsible reporting.

DEVOS: Well, one sexual assault is one too many, and one falsely accused individual is one too many.

"But are they the same?"

Betsy DeVos: I don't know. "But I'm committed to a process that is fair for everyone involved", Devos responded.
