Gold, Platinum Bars Spill Across Russian Runway As Plane Door Flies Open

Plane loses diamonds bars of gold and platinum near Yakutsk

The incident took place on March 15 when a Nimbus Airlines Antonov AN-12 plane lost a part of its hatch during take-off and dropped the precious cargo worth $368 million (Rs 23,90,64,00,000 approximately). The offending hatch then detached from the plane and fell on a local auto market.

According to an official from the Canadian-based Kinross Gold Corporation, which operates mines in Russian Federation, the trove are Doré bars, semi-pure alloys of gold and silver which are later transported to a refinery for purification.

Eyewitnesses say they saw the gold, platinum and diamonds sparkling in the snow.

"At least 172 bars of gold weighing 3.4 tons have been recovered from the area", TASS cited an Interior Ministry source as saying.

Explosion hits as Palestinian PM Rami Hamdallah enters Gaza
He added that the Interior Ministry, and the National Security devices, are investigating all circumstances of the attack. Hamdallah was traveling to Gaza to dedicate a new water treatment plant as part of cooperation between Fatah and Hamas.

Some reports are even suggesting that the gold bars were scattered up to 20 kilometres away from the runway. According to the statement, the plane successfully landed at Magan Airport in the village of Magan, a few kilometers at the west of Yakutsk.

Some reports suggest the staff who prepared the plane for takeoff may be to blame for the glitch. "Is there anyone from Yakutsk? There is gold!" one person wrote under hashtag #Yakutskgold. Yakutsk (the flight's city of origin) is the capital of Russia's main diamond producing region, Yakutia.

Indeed the Russian Far Eastern region is well-known across the globe for its gold mines, as well as its jewelry and cut diamond production.
