Fans of skiing saunas and Father Christmas won't be surprised to hear Finland has been named the happiest place to live. Its capital Helsinki is shown in this file

"Looking at the 10 happiest countries /.../, they have foreign-born population shares averaging 17.2%, about twice that for the world as a whole", the report says. Overall mostly Europeans are seen to be happy and smiling which is important.

The report, released ahead of the United Nations World Happiness Day on March 20, evaluated 156 countries and those at the top were found to have high values in six categories of well-being - income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity.

Not just for natives and citizens, Finland has been regarded as being the country that has the world's happiest immigrant population.

Former perennial first-placer Denmark is now third, while Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden and Australia round out the top ten.

"Governments are increasingly using indicators of happiness to inform their policy-making decisions", said report co-editor Jeffrey D. Sachs, who is also an economics professor.

The US came in at 18th position, down from 14th place in 2017, while Britain ranked 19th and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 20th.

The east African nation is one of the poorest in the world, and has been plagued by ethnic violence and political turmoil for decades. The parameters of happiness levels are based on factors such as life expectancy, social support and corruption.

Although not detailed in the report, the fact Britain has not got any happier since 2012 is probably down years of austerity and bad weather.

NAN reports that the World Happiness Report, an initiative of the United Nations, is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness, aimed at influencing government policy. India ranked 133 out of 156 countries surveyed by the UN.

The unhappiest countries were Burundi, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Tanzania and Yemen. He said a society's happiness seemed to be contagious. 'Those who move to happier countries gain, while those who move to less happy countries lose'.

The latest World Happiness Report reveals that Scandinavia continues to reign supreme; U.S. gets sadder and sadder.

Author' take: I personally believe that we Indians are becoming materialistic, therefore, the happiness rate is declining. "The signs are not good for the U.S. It is getting richer and richer but not getting happier".
