"Black Panther" tops box office for fifth weekend

T'Challa in Black Panther and Lara Croft in Tomb Raider

The 18th release in Marvel's Cinematic Universe of superhero movies has earned $605 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations, and is the first film since "Avatar" (2009) to chalk up five consecutive top spots.

The Marvel movie becomes the first film to top the box office for five straight weeks since "Avatar" in 2009.

Over the weekend, the film held on to its No.1 spot at the box office despite the highly-anticipated release of Tomb Raider.

The rebooted Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander, opened with $23.5 million at home, a modest USA start for the $90 million film based on a video game.

That makes the Marvel movie the seventh-biggest domestic release ever - sliding in right behind "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" ($619.8 million) - and the No. 14 ever worldwide, before adjusting for inflation.

With a reported $250 million spent on production and marketing, the movie will need to gross at least $400 million worldwide to turn a profit, according to Forbes magazine.

While most films see a significant drop off after they're released, Black Panther has beaten the odds and continues to draw in support from fans, who've seen the film multiple times. In the fifth outing, Black Panther of Ryan Coogler is expected to fetch around $25 million or even more.

Tomb Raider opened in second place with $23.5 million.

The Christian drama I Can Only Imagine blew away expectations to open with $17.1 million.

Rounding out the top five was "Love, Simon", led by Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Garner, earning an estimated $11.5 million.

"Black Panther" will face competition next weekend from Universal-Legendary's launch of "Pacific Rim: Uprising" and Paramount's animated comedy "Sherlock Gnomes". The family-friendly Peter Rabbit added $5.2 million over the weekend to brings its six-week total to $102.4 million.

Game Night ($5.6 million), Red Sparrow ($4.5 million) and Death Wish ($3.4 million) round out the top ten.
