French police free 17-year-old in attack case

Lakdim, who was initially believed to have acted alone, held up a auto, fired on police and seized hostages in a supermarket on Friday, in what President Emmanuel Macron called an act of "Islamist terrorism".

Thanks to Beltrame's quick thinking, special police units heard gunshots inside the store Friday and stormed the building immediately, killing the attacker.

US President Donald Trump called for stronger anti-terror measures after Friday's attacks in southern France, Sputnik International reports.

The gunman first hijacked a auto and opened fire on police, then took hostages inside a supermarket.

Investigators found notes referring to IS at Lakdim's home in Carcassonne, a legal source said, including a hand-written letter in which he claimed allegiance to the jihadist group.

Heavily armed police also searched Lakdim's apartment in Carcassonne to search for clues as to his motives and weapon source.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said a woman who was close to the suspect was taken into custody.

"The fight against Daesh will continue without relenting", she said in a statement, using another name for IS.

On Friday, 25-year-old gunman Radouane Lakdim had hijacked a vehicle near the town of Carcassonne in Aude, killing a passenger and wounding the driver, before shooting at a group of police officers on their morning jog and wounding one of them.

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.

EU, six other economies exempt from metal tariffs for now
The proposals require backing from the European Parliament and the 28 EU countries, but they are divided on the issue. But the Computer and Communications Industry Association immediately branded the scheme "discriminatory and harmful".

The shootings come as France remains on high alert following a string of deadly attacks that have killed more than 240 people since 2015.

Officials told reporters that police had managed to get some of the 50 hostages out of the supermarket but that the gunman held one woman as a human shield.

Following this attack that some in France say constitute President Macron's first "true test" in facing the mounting challenges of terrorism and related threats, the French president affirmed his "absolute determination" to crush terrorism and other forms of "fundamentalisms".

Two others were killed after the gunman, Radouane Lakdim, stormed a supermarket in Trèbes and took hostages. Then he went back to see where the assailant was and called police to describe the situation.

Beltrame, who had arrived at the site of the incident, swapped places with a female hostage.

Arnaud Beltrame, 44, a gendarme who once served in Iraq, had been raced to hospital fighting for his life after being shot by the gunman during the siege at the Super U store in the southwestern town of Trebes near the Pyrenees mountains.

Lakdi had demanded that authorities release Salah Abdeslam, the only living suspect and the alleged mastermind of the 2015 terror attacks in Paris that left 130 dead, according to French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb.

France is part of a group of countries whose warplanes have been bombing Islamic State strongholds in Iraq and Syria, where the group has lost substantial ground in recent months.

"Arnaud Beltrame died in the service of the nation to which he had already given so much", Macron said.
