Jaguar signs deal to produce self-driving I-Pace

The Waymo-powered self-driving Jaguar I-PACE SUV

Waymo, the company that grew of out of Google's self-driving auto project, announced a deal to buy up to 20,000 electric cars over the next two years, a move that shows the scope of its ambition when it comes to driverless ride-hailing services. Today, JLR announced it'll partnering up with Waymo in a long-term deal - and it should result in a 20,000 strong fleet of self-driving EVs in the first two years of production. Waymo will continue to use its 600 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids until then, and the I-Pace will act as a more premium option down the line.

The announcement marks Waymo's first obvious step towards bringing autonomous vehicles to Europe.

Customers will be able to hail a self-driving I-PACE starting in late 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Testing of the self-driving cars will begin later this year. Instead of everyone running around like headless chickens trying to create their own self-driving systems, manufacturers can simply link up with Waymo and get everything they need fully developed and tested. Krafcik said the autonomous taxi service will operate within a set area of approximately 100 square miles in the Phoenix area. Engineers from both companies will work together to fit the electric SUVs with self-driving technology during construction rather than attempting to retrofit each vehicle after the fact. "That's the world we're building". The company has racked up the most autonomous test miles on roads, and millions more in simulation. The ultimate goal: "with Waymo as the driver, products tailored for every objective and every trip", said Waymo in a post on medium.

U.S. drags China to WTO on discriminatory technology licensing requirements
The comments came in a phone call between China's vice-premier Liu He and US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The broader S&P 500 index lost 2.5 per cent and is now down slightly for the year.

The first self-styled "premium" autonomous vehicle has been unveiled in NY - and it's a Jaguar. However, did slightly deeper, and it's just as beneficial for Waymo as it is for Jaguar.

Waymo has been testing five different types self-driving vehicles over the years, and now it's adding another to its expanding autonomous fleet: an all-electric Jaguar I-PACE SUV.

The Senate is also trying to fast-track regulations, but even at a rapid pace by government standards, rules for self-driving vehicles are likely to develop more slowly than technology companies are accustomed to.
