Hawk boys win season-opening track meet

Several high school track and field teams traveled to Seguin High School to participate in the Matador Relays on Saturday, March 24.

The Chuck Randall Relays sets itself apart from other meets as many relays are added to the day's events to replace the typical track events.

Goshen had two girls' relay teams competing in Monday's meet, and the Goshen "A" team consisting of Jessica Benson, Erin Ashley, Kelsey Salmons, and Hannah Lambert ran for first place finish in the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 12:48.81.

Distance runner Logan Bates picked up points for the team with a sixth-place result in the 1,600 (5:28.78) and fifth in the 3,200 (11:57.94). Jalen Smith also placed third in the high jump (5-0) and fourth in the long jump (16-9.75). Cocalico's Austin Landers won the long jump, going 19-2.5, and the Eagles won the meet, 82-67.

In the 100 M Dash, Julianna Harrington took fifth place with a time of 13.82, Tempestt Flaggs finished in sixth place (13.92), Shaelyn Jaynes landed in ninth place (14.66) and Presley Carter finished 10th (14.69).

He was the fastest in the 400-meter dash in 53.10 seconds.

Junior Elizabeth Schwerdtfeger finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, sprinting a 17.68. "Francisco Ledesma placed first in the shot put finals with a distance of 38'-2 1/2" and fourth in the discus finals (110'-11").

Sophomore long-distance runner, Bethany Miller, took second place in the 1600-meter run in 5:32.66.

The Rockets' girls track team finished third in Wednesday's quad-meet.

Senior Kaitlyn Karjala ran a 8:43.38, good for fourth in the 1,500-meter steeplechase.

The meet at Ephrata also featured a showdown between two of the L-L League's top returning girls.

Preston Dew placed 6th in shot put with a distance of 36 feet and 11 inches.

The 4x200 relay team of Myah Kremer, Alexis Cole, Georgia Reemitz and Addison Rodel crossed the line fifth for five points.

Eastern's Cy Young placed fourth in the boys 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:20.50.
