During the encounter, DeCoursey was shot and died from his injuries.

He said then a Special Response Team has been appointed and Tennessee Highway Patrol along with several other area agencies is assisting with the search.

According to a Hopkinsville Police news release obtained by WSMV, the off-duty officer was pulled over in his own vehicle by someone "pretending to be a police officer". He was transported to a hospital where he later died.

Police are now looking for 35-year old James DeCoursey.

Decoursey is believed to be on the run in a stolen vehicle.

A memorial for Officer Meacham was growing fast in front of the Police Department as hundreds of people stopped by all day to leave flowers and pray in front of the fallen officer's patrol auto. He previously worked for 12 years with the Christian County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting occurred in Hopkinsville, a city in the western part of the state, ABC Nashville affiliate WKRN reported.

At a news conference Thursday night, Hopkinsville Police Chief Clayton Sumner said Decoursey was "known to police" but did not elaborate. Police are not revealing the name of the officer at this time to allow time to notify his family.

Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks said Thursday that Meacham was a lifelong resident of Christian County, in southwestern Kentucky. He was married with two school-age children.

Kentucky State Police Post 2 Trooper Rob Austin confirmed that an officer had been shot.

Police were looking for a man who they said fled on foot then took off in a 1997 white Chevrolet pickup truck with license plate 2070GH.
