Kim Jong Un attends South Korean pop stars concert in Pyongyang

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping shake hands in Beijing China in this

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju have joined hundreds of people who watched South Korea's K-pop stars perform in Pyongyang for the first time in more than a decade.

He also took a group photo with them after their performance, according to North Korea's state news agency and South Korean media pool reports from Pyongyang. Kim highly praised the popular girl band and later even shook hands with the band members.

'He said that he was deeply moved to see our people sincerely acclaiming the performance, deepening the understanding of the popular art of the South's side, ' KCNA said.

The audience cheered and sang along to songs during the two-hour concert and the South Korean performers were later presented with bouquets.

Red Velvet was one of the South Korean performers that was being looked forward to.

When the government in Seoul made a decision to blast some of its top hits across the border with massive loudspeakers along with weather and news reports, North Korea condemned it as an act of war.

When it comes to North Korea, U.S. President Donald Trump's policies have been whiplash inducing. Red Velvet, who sang their hit "Bad Boy" and were dressed conservatively in Pyongyang, rather than wearing their favored midriff-baring T-shirts and sexy stockings, were apparently of particular interest to Kim. Whether Pyongyang authorities would make any demands was a matter of debate in South Korea's media because the general public in North Korea is strictly banned from listening to K-pop.

One of the most closely watched acts was Red Velvet, part of the South's hugely popular K-pop phenomenon that has taken audiences in Asia and beyond by storm.

Rock band YB performed next follows by K-pop girl group Red Velvet and then a performance by Choi Jin Hee - who is visiting the North for the fourth time - and Lee Sun Hee took place.

South Korean movies were often reported to be especially taboo compared with Chinese films, according to a report by the InterMedia consultancy group, with North Koreans facing prison time if caught.

Elsewhere, a joint military exercise involving USA and South Korean troops got underway in South Korea on Sunday, local media reported.

The last time a South Korean artist performed in the North was in 2005, when Cho Yong-pil held a solo concert in Pyongyang.

"North Korean refugees overwhelmingly and consistently report that it has become more unsafe to consume foreign media under Kim Jong Un's crackdowns", Sokeel Park, the South Korea country director for refugee aid organization Liberty in North Korea, wrote Monday on Twitter.

He was seen in another directly addressing members of Red Velvet, which commands more than 4.6 million followers on Instagram.

During his meeting with Trump, Abe is also expected to urge the US leader to exempt Tokyo from Washington's stiff new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, according to a Japanese government source.

"We should hold culture and art performances frequently", Kim said to the performers.

A 2015 survey of North Korean refugees conducted by the USA government's Broadcasting Board of Governors found that 77 percent of respondents said it had become more unsafe to listen to foreign radio under Kim.

About 300,000 South Korean soldiers were participating in the four-week Foal Eagle training alongside more than 11,500 United States troops, a spokesman for the ministry said.

This year's drills feature fewer strategic weapons such as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Seoul's military has said.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC said he's glad John Bolton will serve as Trump's national security adviser going into talks with North Korea because of his "very healthy skepticism".

"We had the responsibility of providing the freedom and convenience of media coverage", he said.
