Labour's antisemitism row: Corbyn criticised for attending left-wing Jewish Passover

A protest by Jewish groups outside Parliament was followed by the resignation of Christine Shawcroft, the chair of Labour's internal disputes panel, after the leak of an email suggesting that she had supported a local candidate who was suspended over accusations of anti-Semitism.

Jeremy Corbyn has defended his decision to attend a dinner organised by a left-wing Jewish group following criticism from mainstream Jewish leaders.

The group also said that protests against Corbyn for failing to tackle antisemitism are "faux-outrage greased with hypocrisy and opportunism".

Mr Lansman replied: "I think we all should".

Anti-Semitism allegations have been an issue for Labour for a while.

A spokesman for Corbyn admitted that the Labour UK leader had attended the Jewdas event, but said Corbyn had participated in a personal capacity, and not as a representative of his party.

'And he must know that meeting them now will give his members the message that the group's extreme views are OK'.

The chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council has called on Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn to stand up for "vilified" Labour MPs after a fresh row over relations with the Jewish community.

Mr. Corbyn, he added, "is either incredibly obtuse or he just doesn't care", and he has created a crisis he could have averted simply by "taking the advice of people he doesn't like".

Asked if he had any regrets about being at the Jewdas event, the Labour leader said: "Not in the slightest".

Last week Jewdas accused the BOD, the Jewish Leadership Council and the Jewish Labour Movement of "playing a unsafe game with people's lives" after a more than 1,500-strong protest demonstration, held outside parliament, called on Corbyn to do more to tackle anti-Semitism in Labour.

Mr Corbyn said the Seder feast was "very interesting" and involved "talking to a lot of young people about their experiences of modern Britain". "Isn't that a good thing?"

"It's a radical diaspora Jewish group that has taken an explicitly non-Zionist stance, alongside satirizing the many absurdities of the British Jewish community and throwing excellent parties", according to a founder of the group, Joseph Finlay.

The group said: 'We are proud to be Jews and proud of everyone who attended, whether they were Jewish or not.

Corbyn has promised an investigation into the allegations and Momentum, the fringe group backing Corbyn's leadership, admitted the party had "failed" on antisemitism.

He added that it was "deliberately baiting the mainstream Jewish community days after they pleaded with him to tackle anti-Semitism".

Ivor Caplin, the spokesman for the Jewish Labour Movement, said Corbyn's attendance at the event "topped off the worst week on record of terrible relations between the Labour Party and the Jewish community".

Karen Pollock, the chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, claimed that Corbyn's meeting was "clearly deliberate".

Jon Lansman, the leader of Momentum, a Corbyn-supporting grassroots movement which says it wants to ensure Labour implements socialist policies such as wealth distribution, said the party needs to do more to tackle antisemitism.

Jewdas shrugged off the attack, posting a Twitter message: 'Great that there's so much interest in our work tonight!
