Mueller Authorized To Probe Manafort's Alleged Collusion With Russia

President Donald Trump departs the White House in Washington to board Marine One

Van der Zwaan is the son-in-law of one of Russia's richest men and was the 19th person to be charged by special counsel Robert Mueller.

"What I did was wrong", he said.

Van der Zwaan does have a prominent connection to Russian Federation beyond his work with Gates and Manafort - his father-in-law is Alfa Bank co-founder German Khan, one of the country's richest men. "I await your judgment".

According to a two-page indictment released by the special counsel's office February 20, the Ukraine-connected attorney misled authorities about his most recent contact with Gates; deleted and failed to produce emails Mueller's team had requested; and misrepresented his involvement in an global law firm's report on former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in 2012.

The memo, which had not previously been released publicly and remains redacted in parts, said that Mueller was empowered to investigate allegations that Manafort "committed a crime or crimes by colluding with Russian government officials" to interfere with the presidential election.

Back in February, van der Zwaan pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about his conversations with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates. "This was lying to a federal officer in the course of a criminal investigation".

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and tax evasion.

While Van der Zwaan's lawyers hoped to settle the case with a fine and an immediate expulsion from the US, District Judge Amy Burman deemed the incarceration more fitting so as to deter others from lying in investigations of such importance.

Van der Zwaan, 33, is married to the daughter of prominent Russian billionaire German Khan, founder of the privately owned Alfa Bank.

Mega Millions Winning Ticket Of $521 Million Sold In New Jersey
The winning Mega Millions ticket was sold at a Lukoil station in Riverdale, N.J., in Morris County, ABC reported . In the past, the New Jersey Lottery has executed a verification process before revealing the location.

Since his return in December 2017, his lawyer said, van der Zwaan has been walled up in a residential hotel in Washington and unable to return to London, where his wife is undergoing a hard first pregnancy.

"He is literally in limbo", Schwartz said.

Flash forward to November 2017: Mueller's team wants to know what van der Zwaan's link is to Gates and an unidentified individual called "Person A".

"I assure you", she said, "that right now that while this might feel like the most momentous thing in your life, much of the story of your life, indeed the majority of the story of your life, has yet to be written".

A protester holds a sign as former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort (R) arrives at the Albert V. Bryan U.S. Courthouse for an arraignment hearing on March 8, 2018 in Alexandria, Virginia.

The indictment against him did not refer to the 2016 election campaign.

His lawyers had asked that he be able to return to London by August, when his wife is due to deliver their first child. He also had lied years ago about helping Gates to spin an independent report he worked on in favor of Gates' and Manafort's political clients in Ukraine.

The Skadden report has been controversial in Ukraine in part because its findings seemed to contradict the worldwide community's conclusion that Tymoshenko had been unjustly jailed.
