Filmmaker alleges Stranger Things creators stole show's concept from him

Stranger Things creators sued for allegedly stealing show's concept

Matt and Ross Duffer are being sued by Filmmaker Charlie Kessler for allegedly stealing his concept.

The suit also notes that the Duffers' series was given the working title of The Montauk Project, with the series originally set in the Long Island town of Montauk before the setting was ultimately changed to Indiana. That could be because Kessler's short film and the Duffer Brothers' Stranger Things are both inspired by the conspiracy around Montauk and supernatural/psychological experiments conducted in the area in the 1960s and 70s.

In a statement sent to Newsweek via email, the Duffer Brothers' attorney Alex Kohner denied that the two parties ever met, or that the Duffer Brothers had seen Kessler's short film.

The short film is based on a real-life conspiracy theory about Montauk involving secret paranormal government experiments at the base in the 1970s. He claims he pitched the idea to the Duffer Brothers in 2014 at the Tribeca Film Festival, and that they used it as inspiration for Stranger Things in 2016.

Kessler is seeking monetary damages and a jury trial over the alleged plagiarism. Kessler's concept was a science-fiction story set near an abandoned military base and involved a missing boy and a monster that resembles a toy. Neither Netflix, which isn't named in the suit, nor the Duffer brothers have responded with any comment.

Part of the reason for the appeal of Stranger Things is the way in which it incorporates elements of other franchises, whether in the form of quick references or overriding themes within the plot itself.

Stay tuned for more information and news about the new season of the hit Netflix series. The setting for the Duffer brothers' show was later changed to a fictional IN town called Hawkins.

Kessler's lawyer Michel Kernan alleges that the conversation in 2014 between his client and the Duffers created an implied contract. This news comes soon after the pay raise the cast received ahead of the show's third season, which begins production this month.
