Prince Philip 'in good spirits' after hip replacement operation

The Duke of Edinburgh underwent surgery for a hip replacement Wednesday after he'd been admitted to the hospital the day before for the planned surgery. "He is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage", Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Buckingham Palace says the procedure for the Queen's 96-year-old husband had been planned.

The elderly husband of Queen Elizabeth II is set to undergo hip surgery in a London hospital.

He is said to be "comfortable and in good spirits".

The duke stepped down from his public duties last summer, but on occasion does attend events with the Queen. He is thought to have been suffering with hip pain for a month, during which he missed church services on Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday.

At a ceremony commemorating Britain's war dead last November, he appeared to be having trouble standing and leaned against a wall. It is understood that the operation will require a general anaesthetic.

"What is most important is someone's fitness, as in their heart and lung fitness, how much exercise they do and how well nourished they are".

According to the Daily Mail's Richard Kay, Philip accepted medical advice after being told his hip complaint could prevent him from participating in his "beloved" sport of carriage driving. He accompanied the queen on visits overseas as late as 2015.

Also invited will be 200 people from various charities associated with the couple, 100 students from two local schools, 610 Windsor Castle community members and 530 Members of The Royal Households and Crown Estate.

Never one to talk about his own feelings, the queen has been more forthcoming about his worth.
