Cheering crowd greets Jacob Zuma at court hearing

South Africa court adjourns Zuma corruption case

The immediate past president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, is appearing in court today, April 6 to face corruption charges related to a 1990s arms deal.

The 75-year-old appeared in the high court in Durban this morning to face 16 counts of corruption, racketeering, fraud and money laundering. Schabir Shaikh, his former financial adviser, was found guilty and jailed in 2005 for trying to solicit bribes for Mr Zuma from a subsidiary of French arms company Thales.

Zuma's legal team will seek a review of National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams' decision that there was no reason for him not to be tried.

"What we are saying, what the former president is saying, is true - we don't think we are going to get a fair trial", said a supporter, Bishop Timothy Ngcobo who appeared on stage alongside Zuma.

The government said the fact that he was attending the summit as a head of state meant he had immunity, but the court disagreed.

The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) laid corruption charges against the Guptas and Zuma's son Duduzane.

At that point the charges seemed likely to crush Zuma's ambition to be president.

However, the opponents of the ex-South African leader think that the court trial is long overdue. Upon exiting the court, Zuma told a rapturous crowd of thousands that he would prevail amid this new onslaught of political persecution.

It seems Jacob Zuma's legal woes keep mounting.

Filmmaker alleges Stranger Things creators stole show's concept from him
This news comes soon after the pay raise the cast received ahead of the show's third season, which begins production this month. Neither Netflix , which isn't named in the suit, nor the Duffer brothers have responded with any comment .

"I want to thank you as I thanked you many years ago".

"It is important that members who would prefer to go to court to pledge their own support, do so in their own capacity as individuals", said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe in a video posted on the party's Facebook page.

Although Mr Zuma's court appearance on Friday only lasted 20 minutes, the hearing was instructive in terms of gauging how much support he retains in the ANC after losing the presidency in March and standing down as the party's leader in December.

In February, Mr Zuma resigned following intense pressure from the ANC party.

He also told the cheering crowd that "the truth will come out" and "I am innocent until proven guilty".

Since then Zuma has been replaced as President by Cyril Ramaphosa.

In 2016, the High Court ruled that Mpshe's decision to drop the charges was irrational and ordered the charges be reinstated.

"Even those I trusted are treating me like a convicted criminal", he said, describing the case as one full of lies and conspiracy.
