She responded to a heat reception from the gang contained in the Carrara Sports Enviornment on Monday afternoon by performing a 120kg snatch carry in her first try to put the competitors on discover.
"Crying my eyes out watch Laurel Hubbard, I wish I could share some of this pressure with her", tweeted dual-international athlete and transgender activist Kirsti Miller. It was a sad end to the competition for her and a convenient one for all those people who have been watching with incredulity.
But video footage shows the moment it went badly wrong as she dropped the bar behind her and left her arm twisted awkwardly.
"At this stage we don't know the exact details of the injury", she told reporters.
Described as an "introverted character" by New Zealand's weightlifting high-performance director Simon Kent, Hubbard admitted she had anxious about the crowd's reaction prior to competition.
"I saw the photo of her and it was very clear she enjoys a physical advantage which is not possible for born women to enjoy, " McGregor told the Daily Telegraph. "It seems likely that I have ruptured a ligament or ... some fairly significant tissue damage, but until we have further scanning we won't know the details or extent of the injury", Hubbard said. Hubbard was judged eligible to compete as a woman a year ago after showing testosterone levels below the threshold required by the International Olympic Committee.
Hubbard's presence had been criticised by some officials from rival countries, but she received a huge roar of support when she was introduced to the crowd.
Hubbard's withdrawal paved the way for Stowers to claim the gold with a combined total of 253kg, ahead of Nauruan lifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant (243) and England's Emily Campbell (242).
Border states pledge 1600 troops for Trump's border fight
Trump said last week that he would be sending up to 4,000 troops to the southern border until his proposed border wall was built. But the state's National guard did not return phone and email messages Monday seeking comment on how many have arrived.
"The crowd was absolutely magnificent", said Hubbard.
Australian Weightlifting Federation CEO Michael Keelan wrote to the IWF and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in an attempt to have Hubbard banned.
"I'm glad that I've gone out trying to achieve my best on the platform because as the (New Zealand team) slogan says you have to "earn the fern", you can't just phone it in".
Formerly known as Gavin, Hubbard set national records as a male weightlifter in 1998 before subsequently transitioning, reportedly aged 35.
Hubbard herself had earlier acted very diplomatically when speaking of the criticism.
"I think you have to be true to yourself and I hope in this case, that's what I have done".
She was proud to have made history.
