J&K encounter: Jawan killed, four civilians die in clashes

The operation against militants in Kulgam, which began on Tuesday night, was called off after one soldier and four civilians were killed, even as the militants managed to escape.

Earlier, two other civilians, Bilal Ahmad Dar, 17, and Sharjeel Sheikh 28, injured during clashes between protesters and security forces at Wani Mohalla in Khudwani area of Kulgam had died. In 2018, till now, around 100 people including 24 civilians, 48 militants and 27 police, army and paramilitary forces were killed.

While police and army officials maintain that the search operation was in progress, sources said the security forces withdrew following the clashes.

There were also reports of locals pelting stones on security forces during the encounter.

Locals in Indian occupied Kashmir protesting. Three among them, including two teenagers, succumbed to the injuries on being brought to the hospital. Three Army jawans and four civilians were also killed in the incident.

Further details are awaited, they said adding two to three militants are reportedly trapped there.

Authorities reacted with a security clampdown, shutting down internet services in southern parts of Kashmir and suspending train services south of Srinagar. The Joint Resistance Leadership called a Valley wide shutdown against the killings.

Senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said Kashmiris were "left with no option other than to come out on roads" to protest.
