Volkswagen has appointed Herbert Diess as CEO

Volkswagen CEO Shakeup? Dieselgate Still Roiling Upper Management Ranks At Volkswagen?

Brand manager Herbert Diess is set to replace current group chief executive Mueller, who was installed shortly after the company admitted in September 2015 that it installed software in diesel vehicles that manipulated emissions test results.

Volkswagen replaced Mueller after he failed to refocus the group's portfolio of auto brands, a key pillar of "Strategy 2025" to transform the company into a leader in cleaner cars after the diesel emissions scandal of 2015.

A Volkswagen spokesman declined to comment.

"It is unclear how soon Diess, a former BMW executive who joined VW in July 2015 and has clashed with the company's labor leaders, might replace Mueller". As VW's chief executive officer, "conflict will be part of the program". It's a sign of real change at VW. It said chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch will spearhead the transition, and that there is no certainty that personnel changes will in fact occur.

"The way in which changes of such a magnitude were communicated internally is more than questionable", a source close to VW's supervisory board said.

Under Mr Mueller - who was talked into taking the top job in the chaotic days following the public disclosure of the diesel cheating - VW has weathered the blows from the scandal while embarking on an aggressive expansion into electric cars.

Trillion-dollar deficits come roaring back under Trump
The report does say the USA gross domestic product is likely to grow faster than previously thought this year. The CBO said the tax cuts and the additional spending will boost consumer demand, supercharging the economy.

After-tax profit rose to 11.6 billion euros ($14.3 billion) previous year, on sales of 230.6 billion euros.

With a dripfeed of Dieselgate issues continuing to emerge from the embattled company Müller has cut a lonely figure, and a fresh start with a CEO who hasn't spent his whole career at the carmaker could be what's needed. Porsche said in a separate release that any changes at VW would be reflected in its management.

Mr Mueller - a veteran of the German vehicle company - was promoted from his role heading the Porsche division to take the job heading the entire group.

Reuters provides more: "The move comes after Europe's largest automaker has been hampered by infighting among its powerful stakeholders, which include the Porsche and Piech families, the German state of Lower Saxony, and labor leaders". But a replacement of the CEO could also signal that some of the primary shareholders and board members are perhaps unhappy with the direction of the company. The surprise leadership switch is due to be finalized at a supervisory board meeting on Friday, the people said.

The potential restructuring was first reported by German magazine Der Spiegel.
