What does James Comey's "A Higher Loyalty" mean in the big picture?

File During his first sit-down interview since being fired last year former FBI Director James Comey reportedly compared President Donald Trump to a

Despite support for penalizing Russian Federation, 52 percent of adults say Trump should invite Vladimir Putin to the White House in an effort to improve U.S. -Russia relations, while 42 percent say Trump should not do so, because it would grant Putin legitimacy.

Merrill blasted Comey for allegedly dancing around dozens of questions in Sunday's ABC interview by answering with "maybe", accusing him of "hubris" and again faulting him for the election of Trump - whom he called "the most self-involved, destructive leader the USA has ever known". Comey says that Trump asked for his loyalty, and that he wanted him to go easy on Michael Flynn, at a moment when Trump may have known that Flynn had committed a crime by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He accused Mr. Comey of lying before Congress and of drafting an exoneration of "Crooked Hillary" Clinton long before talking to her.

Comey's comments in an ABC News interview that aired Sunday were nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president and further erode a relationship marked by open hostility and name-calling.

The interview comes ahead of the release of his tell-all book "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership" on Tuesday.

Comey's interview was produced by the beleaguered "20/20" news magazine, which in recent years has nearly entirely stopped doing hard news and instead largely focuses on mysterious murders, infidelity and even behind-the-scenes looks at other ABC programs, such as "Roseanne". That should be of great interest to historians, but it still doesn't tell us whether to believe Comey or Trump about what went on between them.

Comey went on to say there is a "danger" to democracy in America if voters don't respond to Trump's "threats to the rule of law". "I don't know", Comey said.

Comey said his reaction to the news was disbelief.

Even Now, Paul Ryan Really Doesn't Want To Talk About Donald Trump
Ryan did offer a warning that some conservatives have begun to embrace identity politics, once a province of the Left. The speaker is by far the most prominent figure fleeing Congress in a long season of Republican retirements.

But what's really grabbing headlines this morning is Comey's response to those blasting him for taking what they consider a cheap shot at Trump's appearance in the book.

In his new book, Comey also claims that Trump repeatedly pressed him to investigate the alleged existence of the infamous so-called "pee tape," which purportedly shows Trump watching Russian prostitutes urinate on a Moscow hotel bed in 2013.

As if on cue, hours before the interview aired, Trump called Comey a "slimeball".

"The challenge of this president is that he will stain everyone around him", he said. She also labeled him a "self-admitted leaker" who has "proven to be dishonest". I am fairly certain that he was very careful in both the book and the interview about what he said.

Comey's disclosure shortly before the election that the FBI had reopened its investigation into her email use enraged Democrats. "And so I choose to see the opportunity in a forest fire because what forest fires do is allow things to grow that never could've grown".

The significance of the interview lies in how it affects voters who may be wavering about the president and the Republican Party.

"I told them it was a reservoir of trust and credibility built for you and filled for you by people you never knew, by those who are long gone".

"What I think will make some ripples are the additional details that are provided in some of those anecdotes that he's telling", said Lachlan Markay, White House Correspondent at The Daily Beast.
