Albemarle County, Charlottesville Students Plan Walk-Out to Protest Gun Violence

Teenagers kick off a voter registration rally in Littleton Colorado

From that day forward, class has never been held at Columbine High School on April 20.

In a counter move on Friday, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a Republican, has planned a gun rights rally at the Statehouse in Topeka. "We are in this for the long haul". The fact is, school shootings have been commonplace my entire life.

While some students at Columbine High School will continue their tradition of holding a day of service on April 20, others are planning a combined vigil and voter registration rally alongside students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for Thursday night.

Oakwood High School Sophomore Sammy Caruso says the National School Walkout events will also commemorate the 13 victims of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, which occurred before numerous Dayton student organizers were born.

The first national walkout, on March 14, was set to honor the Stoneman Douglas high school students and teachers who were shot to death on Valentine's Day.

According to a list prepared by the national advocacy group Indivisible, student demonstrations are planned in Davis at Davis High and Da Vinci Charter Academy's high school branch, and in Woodland at Woodland High and at Pioneer High, and it is possible that some of those student protesters may choose to leave their campus during those demonstrations.

Holly Blastic of Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America, which supports Students Demand Action, said she was invited to talk.

"I'm not anxious about an unexcused absence, detention or suspension", Pomp said. "Apparently to some politicians, a vote is scarier than a gun".

Although it is said to be recyclable, discarded PET can last for centuries before it degrades. No other reproduction or distribution is permitted without prior written consent.

"We are not anti guns". "We want to keep it in a positive light".

Kiwinda said he places some of the blame for the misunderstanding on the student rally organizers.

"Sometimes it feels like our world is so divided, that we wanted this to be a time where we could all come together and say enough is enough-we shouldn't have to worry about our survival, we should be worrying about our school work", he says. "We need to let them know that for us this is less of a political issue and more of a human issue".

"It will also follow countless ofldquo;March For Our Lives" rallies in cities to the other side of the US on March 2-4 which were some of those largest U.S. youth demonstrations for years, with hundreds of thousands of young Americans as well as their supporters taking for the streets to demand tighter gun legislation. Our principals have been working with our student leaders at each school to determine what students plan to do, if anything, tomorrow. She then welcomed the student body to go outside for the walkout, which had a police presence and faculty and staff keeping an eye on the event.

Using a GoFundMe account, students raised more than $1,200 to pay for the event. Students will perform music and poetry starting at noon.

Student organizers Ben Russell, Nathan Bryk, Lauren Anderson, Megan Troke, Hannah Vorderer and Jacob Ryan said in a statement the goal is to unite students as one voice to bring pressure for a change in the nation's gun legislation and to influence greater safety at the institutions they attend.

"I think it's a really important way that we as students can make our voices heard", Auden Yurman, a State High sophomore, said.
