Iran's Moves in Syria Raise Risk of Conflict With Israel

Nagel Attack on Syria says there are limits to what will be tolerated

Official Israel responded in kind. Gen. Ronen Manelis, said Friday that the flight path and Israel's analysis of the drone indicated that "the aircraft was carrying explosives" and that its mission was "an act of sabotage in Israeli territory".

But some Israeli defense and security analysts were not as upbeat.

That's why Israel is now confronting Iran in Syria. Iran's rulers routinely call for the destruction of the Jewish state.

The growing Israeli apprehension is reflected in the steadily increasing incidents of Israeli strikes in Syria, strikes which already threaten to escalate into direct conflict with Iran.

In February, Israel downed an Iranian drone after it had infiltrated its airspace.

In the space of a few years, the Iranian regime went from simply conducting an advisory role to becoming deeply embedded in Syria's political, military and security infrastructure.

Both Russia and Iran are paying substantial military, financial and diplomatic costs to support Assad.

American positions clearly indicate the lack of strategic importance of their presence in Syria.

While the Israeli army spokesman initially refused to confirm or deny the Israeli raid, Iran's government unusually highlighted it - and Iran's casualties - and vowed to take revenge. Europe's other alternatives for oil supply can be the Gulf states. Yet the consequences of a USA withdrawal from Syria would be far greater than those of former President Barack Obama's withdrawal, because Russian Federation was not a factor in Iraq and the Israelis did not see Iran's heavy presence there as a direct threat to their security. The Syrian Kurds are closely allied with the U.S. Yet Turkey regards them as terrorists and fears they are working with Turkey's own restive Kurds. Russia's "forces there are insufficient to take on any of the other nations who have operated, and may operate again, in Syria. At the end, I assume that they made all the calculations".

JERUSALEM-Israel faces a harsh new world as Syria's civil war winds down: while Iran remains far away, the Iranian threat now is next door.

Trump and Obama both wanted to keep the Middle East at arm's length, Doran said.

"Israel isn't by itself".

As CAMERA detailed, several major US press outlets carried headlines that confused the order of events and/or minimized Iran's role in provoking the incident.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Monday: "We will not tolerate a significant Iranian military force in Syria in the form of military ports and airports or the deployment of sophisticated weaponry". For the first time, Iran published photos of those killed in the April 9 raid and Russian Federation has become more critical of Israel's actions, two signs that tensions are emerging from the shadows.

"This could prompt Iran, if it thought for a moment that it might not retaliate, that it now needs to", said Danny Yatom, a former Mossad director in an interview with Israel Army Radio.

Doran said Israel and the United States should coordinate to contain Iran. The Iranians don't have a choice. As Lieberman has asserted, "We will not allow Iranian consolidation in Syria".

A Pentagon spokesman said there was no US military activity in that area at this time. If the USA now pulls out of Syria completely, there can be no doubt that Israel will take much more robust steps to counter the Iranian presence.

Will the strike succeed in its limited objective of deterring new chemical attacks? American forces could have inflicted much greater damage-Trump could have ordered the killing of Assad and everyone around him if he had wanted to. It's a response to a single event.
