Donald Trump Considers Posthumous Pardon for Boxer Jack Johnson

"While that may be true, he still has living descendants".

After being prompted by actor Sylvester Stallone, President Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted he is considering granting the late champion boxer Jack Johnson a full pardon.

Most famously, his story was fictionalized for the play "The Great White Hope", starring James Earl Jones, which won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony Award for best play in 1969. After falling short in their first attempt at building a case against Johnson, assistant U.S. District Attorney Harry A. Parkin asked the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation to "secure evidence [of] illegal transportation by Johnson of any other women for an immoral goal". Three years later he was convicted by an all-white jury of violating the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport a woman across state lines for "immoral" purposes.

He was convicted under the Mann Act, a law that was meant to prevent human trafficking and protect women against prostitution, but its critics say the law was used in racially motivated prosecutions of African-Americans and to punish political dissidents.

Haywood said she didn't find out she was related to Johnson until she was 12. "A rich, famous, powerful man, broken down into tears like that because he was going to prison, just because he loved and married outside of his race". Twenty days after the sentence was handed down, he fled to Europe. Jess Myron Willard was capable of beating Johnson in Havana, Cuba, in April 1915 in the 26th round, the New York Post reported.

Johnson skipped bail and became a fugitive for seven years until he turned himself in.

He said that when he thought his answers during the course of the investigation, he went back and tried to correct them. However, he added that he is not suggesting that Comey is "making things up or lying", the report said.

In what could be a historical decision, President Trump announced Saturday that's he's considering a full pardon for legendary boxer Jack Johnson.

The House and Senate previously passed resolutions to posthumously pardon Johnson, but no president has granted the pardon.

In 2016, then-Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., in accordance with USA Today.

Obama did not pardon Johnson, leaving the boxer's descendants "deeply disappointed."

Since the turn of the century, a campaign for a posthumous pardon has gathered pace. John McCain of Arizona and Rep. Peter King of NY wrote in a letter to Obama in 2009. In 2017, Senator Cory Booker joined those efforts.
