Saudi air strike kills dozens of Yemen rebels including commanders

Saudi state television similarly reported a death in the attack.

A Saudi-led coalition air strike has killed dozens of Yemeni rebels including two commanders, state media said Saturday, in another blow to the insurgents following the assassination of their political chief.

Saleh al-Samad, the head of the Supreme political Council of the rebels, supported by Iran, was killed in an air attack Saudi Arabia and its allies last week.

Yemeni forces regularly fire ballistic missile at positions inside Saudi Arabia in retaliation for the Riyadh-led campaign.

Al-Samad, who held the post of president in the Houthi-backed political body, was the most senior official to be killed by the Western-backed alliance, which had offered a $20-million USA reward for any information that led to Samad's capture.

Elsewhere, Yemeni Shia rebels said they fired eight ballistic missiles at targets in Saudi Arabia's southern city of Jizan.

Saudi air strike kills dozens of Yemen rebels including commanders

The Houthis have confirmed that an overnight attack took place but gave no details on casualties.

Saudi state-run tv provided the report early Saturday, saying greater than 50 have been killed.

The Houthi Ansarullah movement, which plays a significant role in supporting the Yemeni army against the war imposed by a Saudi-led coalition, recently vowed to avenge the killing of one of their top leaders, Saleh al-Samad, in a Saudi airstrike last week. He is the most senior Houthi official to be killed by the coalition since Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen three years ago to fight the Houthi rebels and help reinstate ousted President Mansour Hadi. The Shiite rebels known as Houthis did not immediately acknowledge the strike.

Eyewitnesses and residents said that the airstrikes targeted other places such as Najda camp, the Dailmi air base, the presidential palace, Jabal al-Nahdeen and its militia camps and other nearby areas in Sanaa. Four of the missiles were intercepted, the Saudi Defence Ministry told Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV.

Lebanese news outlet Al Mayadeen reported that the Saudi-led coalition was responsible for the strike.
