Armenian opposition block nominates Prime Minister

Armenia's Acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin

After talks with Pashinyan on Sunday, the parliamentary leader of the Republican Party, Vahram Baghdasaryan, said the party would not "impede the election of the people's candidate" if all three opposition factions in parliament supported him.

It is expected that the national Assembly of Armenia will vote for a new Prime Minister on may 1, Pashinyan will declare new parliamentary elections, which according to the Armenian Constitution could be held within two months.

Speaking to AFP in an interview, Pashinyan said Armenians themselves wanted to determine the future of their country and an explosion of tensions was just a matter of time.

Pashinian, who was nominated unanimously by his Yelk alliance, led nearly two weeks of street protests in April that forced the resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan.

"People should have genuine possibilities to influence the political situation and political decisions", Pashinyan said on Monday.

Pashinian has led weeks of street demonstrations in Armenia that resulted in the resignation of Serzh Sarkisian from the prime minister's post.

Pashinyan has received the support of all opposition parties in parliament, who hold 47 seats in the 105-seat legislature, but he will require a majority to win.

During a rally on Sunday in Yerevan's Republic Square, Pashinyan declared his readiness to take up the post of Armenia's prime minister "in a responsible manner". The ruling Republican Party has not nominated its candidate.
