Quake in South African gold mine kills four, two miners still missing

However, mine rescue teams - which the company said had been immediately mobilised - were in contact with three employees, presumably still trapped.

Sibanye-Stillwater wishes to report that 10 of the 13 employees who were trapped following a seismic event (measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale) yesterday, at its Masakhane mine, Driefontein operations, have now been rescued, four of which have succumbed to their injuries and passed away.

A total of 13 people were initially trapped.

Sibanye-Stillwater produces more gold in South Africa than any other company.

"Greater attention must be paid to issues of mine safety and protection of lives, as opposed to the insistence of chasing production", he said.

It called for "more serious intervention" to take place at Sibanye Stillwater operations in South Africa.

U.S. pushes Riyadh to confront Tehran, stirs crisis
President Donald Trump has strongly backed Saudi Arabia in its efforts to counter Iran's influence. Khomenei accused the United States with deception in his address.

Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson James Wellsted confirmed the deaths, which were linked to seismic event at the mine on Thursday. The Department of Mineral Resources and all unions have been notified and are on site to assist with the rescue efforts.

Six of the rescued workers have been hospitalised.

The previous fatal accidents at Sibanye this year included two people who were killed at Driefontein in separate incidents.

"Government is the regulator, so it's for the government to see if these mines are compliant with health and safety", Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union President Joseph Mathunjwa said Friday.

In February, almost 1 000 miners were trapped underground for 30 hours following a power cut caused by a storm in another mine owned by Sibanye-Stillwater.
