"Scout Me In": Local BSA council welcomes girls and families into scouting

Girl Scouts

The program for 11-17-year-old boys will become "Scouts BSA" starting next year. For over twenty-five years, girls have been a part of BSA's co-ed Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouts programs.

In February 2019, Boy Scouts of America will change to Scouts BSA.

We'll leave the last word to Eugene Gu, M.D., an outspoken critic of the President who tweets: "All these conservative snowflakes getting outraged about the Boy Scouts accepting girls and changing its name to Scouts BSA don't realize that it's simply a business decision". The organization's name will remain the same; only the program for older youth will change its name.

The Boy Scouts of America has lost about a third of its members since 2000, which now stands at about 2.3 million.

Williams joins the many voices criticizing the Boy Scouts' decision, including Marine veteran Johnny Jones, who addressed the controversy on "Fox & Friends", saying, "We live in a culture where you can't ask kids to be tough".

"We had a lot of families that saw the great benefits to their sons, to their boys in the family and their sisters wanted to be a part of it", said Barry McDonald, Scout Executive for Grand Colombia Council Boy Scouts, "and for quite a few years there have been folks who have said, 'why can't our daughters be involved?" According to a news release issued yesterday, the BSA announced their new "Scout Me In" campaign, which will aim at welcoming both boys and girls into their Cub Scout Program.

"Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development organization for girls", Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of Girl Scouts of the United States of America, responded to Moneyish in a statement. In its peak years, BSA had more than 4 million participants.

Justify, favorite for Saturday's Kentucky Derby, avoids disaster with post draw
Horses are loaded into the gate two at a time , beginning with posts one and 11, which spend the most time waiting for the start. Justify has made only three starts, but won the April 7 Santa Anita Derby by three lengths over the more experienced Bolt d'Oro.

The Girl Scouts list a series of efforts created to "stay ahead of the pack of youth organizations".

Ultimately, both the Boy Scouts' name change and the Girl Scouts' response are efforts to increase membership in each organization.

For Taylor Gerlach, from Jackson Center, going gold means earning the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award. In Jan. 2017, they announced they would accept transgender members.

A Girl Scout for nine years, she is now a Girl Scout Senior in Troop #30949.

"It's the program that makes a difference for our youth, so as long as they don't alter that, we're good".

However what is changing is the name of one of their core programs, the boy scouts. That includes 23 new merit badges focusing on outdoors and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). So far, around 3,000 females have joined the Cub Scouts.

"We are excited to partner with the BSA to expand its impactful programs that are relevant to all families", said Caroline Dettman, Golin's Chief Creative and Community Officer. Waning numbers have sent both groups scrambling to entice people to join and remain active.
