North Korea goes back to the future - by 30 minutes

'Date is set' for Kim summit

U.S. President Donald Trump added to speculation that North Korea may make a goodwill gesture before his planned summit with leader Kim Jong Un when he tweeted of a possible update soon on the status of three detained Americans.

President Donald Trump indicated he would try to replicate the conciliatory mood on the Korean Peninsula by toning down his own pointed rhetoric, which helped escalate tensions between the U.S. and North Korea previous year.

North Korea went forward in time by 30 minutes, state media reports late on May 4, to match its clocks with those of the South following the inter-Korean summit on April 27.

Park Sang-hak, a North Korean defector and a leader of the activist group sending leaflet balloons into North Korea, warned that South Korea has become "intoxicated by Kim Jong Un's peace offensive".

President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that progress has been made in the planning for a North Korea - U.S. summit. Some 28,500 USA forces are based in the allied nation, a military presence that has been preserved to deter North Korea since the war ended in 1953 without a peace treaty.

"The distribution of leaflets toward North Korea directly violates the spirit of agreement of the Panmunjom Declaration agreed by the South and North Korean leaders for the peace and prosperity of the Korean peninsula", the Ministry of Unification said Friday, ordering activists to "immediately" suspend their operations. And a lot of things have happened, with respect to the hostages. Kim then invited Moon to cross briefly north with him before they returned to the southern side.

The president on Friday shared new details about that meeting but without specifics.

"Kim said 'the United States feels repelled by us, but once we talk, they will realise that I am not a person who will fire a nuclear weapon to the South or the U.S. or target the USA", according to Yoon.

Over 28,000 American troops have been stationed in South Korea since the truce that ended military action in the Korean War. In March, Washington and Seoul began negotiations on how much South Korea should offset the costs of the deployment in the coming years.

Trump also hinted Friday that good news is coming on the three Americans now being held as prisoners by North Korea.

"Given this is only a conciliatory move in the build-up to the summit, I think the meeting is likely to produce something more concrete", he said.
