Mets to designate former All-Star Matt Harvey for assignment

Harvey has refused to go down to the minor leagues for an assignment and the team announced on Friday that they have designated the pitcher for assignment.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson revealed the news during a press conference prior to Friday's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Harvey has always frustrated the Mets with some of his off-field antics, although the team was willing to put up with him while he was dominating opposing hitters.

The Mets are finally ready to cut ties with former ace Matt Harvey, who crashed and burned in 2018, failing as both a starter and reliever. But because he had been in the major leagues five years, Harvey was allowed to decline given league rules. He exited the outing to boos from the NY crowd. "This is a very unfortunate, hard conclusion".

Callaway said Harvey has mechanical issues that could be worked on in the minors.

Harvey has a 6.77 ERA in 119 2/3 innings combined between this year and last. "We feel our job is to help every player in there and it's not a good feeling when you don't". Harvey was out in Manhattan the night before. He pitched a one-hit shutout in that start and went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA and a career-high 191 strikeouts that season. That led to Tommy John surgery on October 22. "Going down there and being able to see how guys get ready", he told reporters.

The right-hander has been the subject of criticism in recent days after he was spotted partying in Los Angeles on Thursday night before the Mets played the Padres in San Diego. He was suspended for three days without pay in May for skipping a game following a late night on the town. "So I guess the short answer is no". In his first 36 big-league starts, spanning the 2012-13 seasons, he posted a 2.39 ERA and earned the nickname "The Dark Knight".

Harvey, who was one of the National League's best pitchers through three seasons, has suffered a major drop-off over the last three years while dealing with various injuries.
