Rescue workers reach 1 more miner in Poland, 4 still missing

Rescue teams have confirmed the death of one Polish coal miner and can see another miner trapped after an natural disaster, but it is not known if he is dead or alive, the chief executive of mine owner JSW said. We have no contact with five other miners.

After the quake hit, four miners were rescued quickly but seven others went missing.

As Reuters reported, the rescuers have found another trapped miner, but his evacuation will take several hours.

One miner was killed after an quake struck the Zofiowka coal mine in southern Poland on Saturday, the CEO of the company that owns the mine has confirmed, according to Reuters. The mine is located in the southern town of Jastrzebie-Zdroj near Poland's border with the Czech Republic.

Ozon said the company believed the miner was 38 and had been working at JSW for ten years, but was waiting for the man's family to confirm his identity.

The head of the Jastrzebie Coal Company, Daniel Ozon, said a doctor confirmed the two fatalities and identification of the victims was underway. He says the miner had been trapped under some metal and was not responsive. Two were rescued earlier with injuries that were not life-threatening.
