Armenia protest leader Nikol Pashinyan elected prime minister

Armenia & Karabakh Velvet Revolution Velvet Revolution Update

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian faces an array of challenges, including a parliament dominated by the party he denounced as corrupt and how to resolve the volatile question of Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan under the control of ethnic Armenian forces.

As reported, the candidacy Pashinian voted 59 deputies.

That result sent Pashinyan's supporters out onto the streets again and Republicans quickly capitulated, announcing that they would not block Pashinyan's election in the next vote. The opposition protested against the election of former President Serzh Sargsyan to the post of prime minister.

Armenia's parliament has opened a session to elect a prime minister, for which opposition lawmaker and protest leader Nikol Pashinian is the only nominee.

His creativity was visible during a parliamentary election campaign a year ago, when he went into courtyards, clambered onto the roofs of garages and stood on benches to deliver speeches.

"I hope that your performance as the head of government will contribute to efforts to further strengthen friendly, allied relations between our countries, partnership within the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization", Putin stressed in his message of congratulations. "Jobs will appear, people will return, corruption will disappear", said demonstrator Tigran Azizian, a 42-year-old worker in the city's subway.

Lebanon's new election law unlikely to upset balance of power
Lebanon's parliamentary make-up reflects the amalgamation of communities, religions and sects living side-by-side in the country. Lebanon has long had a power-sharing political system between the different religious denominations.

Pashinian, who will turn 43 on June 1, received a hero's welcome when he headed to Republic Square, the main venue of the protests, later in the afternoon. "We regard military cooperation with Russian Federation as an important factor of ensuing Armenia's security", he said, adding he will also strive to deepen Armenia's ties with the European Union and the United States.

The ruling party said it will not nominate their own candidate for the second round, just like in the first round.

After a referendum approved the constitutional reform in 2015, the country is to switch from the presidential to the parliamentary rule.

After the plebiscite, thousands of opposition supporters rallied against alleged mass violations at polling stations.

Critics accuse Sarkisian and his Republicans of corruption and failure to tackle widespread poverty and the influence of powerful oligarchs in the tiny South Caucasus nation of 2.9 million people.
