GOP voters in W.Va. reject ex-convict for Senate

Breaking: Surprising winner announced in highly contested West Virginia GOP primary

Yet despite the financial advantages, the political headwinds are largely against Democrats in states that voted for President Donald Trump in 2016. According to sources within the White House Trump Jr's been making phone calls and offering to go out and basically campaign and be seen with certain GOP candidates who may be in a bit of trouble in their years' midterms.

With the win Tuesday, Manchin will seek a second six-year term in November.

In both cases, Trump's party appears to have avoided the missteps that doomed candidates in high-profile Senate races in the past.

Particularly in Senate races in Ohio, West Virginia and in, where Democrats are playing defense, incumbents maintained a healthy edge in cash on hand.

In other highly anticipated races, two candidates for the 3rd District have been chosen, with Democrats selecting state Sen. Joe Manchin's general election challenger. Morrisey was the eventual victor in the race. "You've been to the state now four times".

The GOP looks to flip a couple of seats in November.

Voters in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina headed to the polls Tuesday to decide a number of key primaries. Pittinger is the first incumbent to lose his seat this primary season.

The GOP considers Donnelly to be one of the most vulnerable Democratic senators up for election in November. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has been notably restrained while discussing the former GOP Senate candidate since Tuesday's primary.

"I want to say one thing very clearly", Manchin told reporters who huddled around him in the basement of the Capitol. He'll be the favorite to win the seat in November.

Democratic leaders got exactly what they wanted in OH as they try to reclaim the governor's mansion in key battleground state. Race moves from Lean Republican to Toss-Up. Tiberi's candidate, Troy Balderson of Zanesville pulled out a win.

Warriors advance Western Conference Finals
At one point, it seemed like a sure thing that Derrick Favors would go elsewhere when he became a free agent after the season. When it's May and buckets are hard to come by and everyone is running on fumes, you need a superstar to take over the game.

The results capped a dramatic final week in which Trump used his Twitter bully pulpit to persuade voters not to pick Blankenship and throw away a shot at a winnable race.

Mid-term elections are typically hard for the party in power, and this year's is no exception.

Harris cast the primary as a battle for "the heart and soul of the Republican Party".

But Tuesday's turnout, where Republicans outvoted Democrats by almost 2-to-1, doesn't bode well for Donnelly.

Trump's political advisers view the event as a way to project party unity following a bruising primary between Braun and two Indiana Republican congressmen.

Rupp said Manchin will have to "stand against the red tide" in West Virginia. Yet Tuesday's turnout bodes well for Manchin. They are among the small group of Democrats who supported a rollback of some Obama-era Wall Street regulations and voted for some of President Trump's nominees, including Supreme Court Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, but have so far faced only minor anti-establishment blowback. Ted Cruz (R), and former representative Mike Espy has an open field to the Democratic Party's nomination in MS as Republicans are engaged in a bitter, ideological contest. He will face a well-financed Democrat, Marine veteran Dan McCready, who has raised nearly $2 million.

Trump and his party invested significant time and resources to attack Blankenship in recent weeks. The head of the Senate Republican campaign arm has highlighted Blankenship's criminal history.

Blankenship retired eight months later, was sentenced to a year in prison for conspiring to break mine safety laws, a misdemeanor, and served a year in a California prison.

Blankenship continues to blame government regulators for the disaster, even in his concession speech.
