Ebola outbreak declared in Democratic Republic of Congo may spread

Malawi on Ebola alert, Ministry of Health monitoring DRC situation

Yet exactly why the DRC is hit so often remains an unanswered question.

"Our country is facing another epidemic of the Ebola virus, which constitutes an global public health emergency", the ministry said in a statement.

Fortunately, the DRC, which has had more Ebola outbreaks than any other country, has developed effective ways of controlling the virus.

Tourism CS Najib Balala further quashed those fears saying travellers moving in and out of the country were free to do so, saying "There is no EBOLA in Kenya or Africa, save for a an isolated remote area in DRC".

But, now health officials have revealed the first death since the latest outbreak, with another 17 suspected cases currently being treated.

Adewole noted that the Port Health services unit has been placed on red-alert and will heighten screening measures at ports of entry.Adewole stated that government had strengthened the nation's health security infrastructur e to effectively prevent, detect and respond to infectious diseases including Ebola. These were sent to Institute National de Recherche Biomédicale in Kinshasa on 7 May 2018, where the two samples from Ikoko-Impenge were found positive by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay for Ebola virus on the same day. The virus is also spread through sexual contact.

The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person or even a primate or fruit bat.

North Korea to blow up nuke-site tunnels before Trump-Kim talks
North Korea will publicly dismantle the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site in the next two weeks, according to state media. North Korea has conducted six nuclear tests at this site.

Ebola experts have various suspicions about why the DRC remains so vulnerable. "This includes essential items like stretchers, chlorine disinfectant, Ebola kits, informational posters and other supplies to support the local communities and health centres".

Ebola viruses are a group of particularly nasty viruses that have a significant burden across Africa.

The outbreak in DR Congo resulted in 19 suspected cases out of which 16 died.

Between them, the two cities have a population of more than 12 million. They are using the same approach taken during a successful response to an EVD outbreak previous year.

Three of the cases, including one of the deaths, involved healthcare workers, which was potentially "an amplification factor" for outbreaks, Peter Salama said.

"In addition to showing high efficacy among those vaccinated, the trial also shows that unvaccinated people in the rings were indirectly protected from Ebola virus through the ring vaccination approach (so called "herd immunity")".

A spokesman for the director of epidemiology in DRC said government experts would meet on Thursday to discuss measures to prevent it crossing the border to neighbouring Congo-Brazzaville.
