Multiple Blasts Hit East Afghanistan City, at Least Six Killed

Afghanistan: Blasts, gunfire rock Jalalabad

Multiple blasts in the eastern city of Jalalabad have killed at least four people and wounded more than 20 others, health officials said.

Afghan security forces have struggled to combat the Taliban and ISIS since the U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat role in the country in 2014, shifting to a support and counterterrorism mission.

At least four attackers, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, still appeared to be fighting police.

Daesh has claimed responsibility for an attack on a government building in Afghanistan on Sunday, the militant group's Amaq news agency said without providing any evidence.

Earlier, he said there had been two explosions.

Security forces were able to rescue around 50 employees stuck in the building during the attack, he added.

On May 6, an explosion at a mosque in the eastern Afghan province of Khost killed at least 10 people and wounded 29.

Trump berates DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over border security
Homeland Security's deputy secretary position is vacant, so there would be no immediate replacement if Nielsen were to step down. In late April, the president tasked Nielsen's Department of Homeland Security to contain and break up the traveling migrants.

Jalalabad is the capital of restive Nangarhar, which borders Pakistan.

April saw a series of attacks across the country targeting voter registration centers as the country gears up for long-delayed legislative elections due in October.

Most have been in capital city Kabul, but in January gunmen attacked an office of aid group Save the Children in Jalalabad, killing at least five people and wounding 25.

Taliban militants and fighters of Islamic State outfit have presence in Nangarhar province, some 120 km east of Kabul.

The Taliban and ISIS have made clear their intentions to disrupt the elections.

Heavy security forces arrived at the spot of the attack.
