Trump berates DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over border security

"We are a country of laws and the president and his administration will enforce them", she responded. He urged voters to "give me some reinforcements, please" in the form of new Republican members.

Trump reportedly complained to his cabinet that they need to do more to address the border.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told colleagues she almost resigned after President Donald Trump berated her Wednesday at a Cabinet meeting for not adequately securing the nation's borders, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Today's Washington Post, however, reports that Nielsen did not threaten to resign. "Why don't you have solutions?"

Trump's advisers have been increasingly criticizing the Homeland Security chief in private conversations with the president, arguing that she isn't doing enough to improve border security and noting that she wasn't a vocal Trump supporter during the campaign, three people familiar with the internal discussions told POLITICO. The blowup lasted more than 30 minutes, according to a person with knowledge of what transpired, as Trump's face reddened and he raised his voice, saying Nielsen needed to "close down" the border. "It's frustrating to have your boss unhappy about that".

Nielsen has drafted a resignation letter but has not submitted it, The Times reported. Nielsen herself did not deny that the meeting had been contentious or that she had almost resigned. Nielsen issued a statement Thursday night, but it does not directly address the report or that she came close to resigning.

While the president rages at the limits of his power, he has found other outlets to express his anti-immigration agenda.

Video shows teen choked by police officer outside North Carolina Waffle House
In a video that has now gone viral, Anthony is seen with his hands in the air before the officer places his hands around his neck. Wall was still dressed in his black-and-tan tuxedo vest when the incident occurred at a Waffle House in Warsaw, North Carolina.

Since taking office, he has called on Congress to enact stricter immigration laws, and his Justice Department has dedicated increased resources to prosecuting illegal border crossers. "They don't have skills".

"They're overwhelmingly rural people", he told NPR. "But the laws are the laws".

"I share his frustration", she added. "The children will be taken care of-put into foster care or whatever".

Trump has been a long critic of the current immigration system. Over the previous year, the president has been systematically ending Temporary Protected Status for immigrant groups who were granted amnesty in the United States following natural disasters or political upheaval in their own countries. Many of them have lived in the US for more than a decade.

In late April, the president tasked Nielsen's Department of Homeland Security to contain and break up the traveling migrants.

Homeland Security's deputy secretary position is vacant, so there would be no immediate replacement if Nielsen were to step down.
