Apple now has 55 self-driving cars in California

Apple Self Driving Lexus

At present, Apple has 55 self-driving vehicles that it is testing on public roads. In January, Apple increased its self-driving vehicle fleet ninefold to 27 and to 45 by April this year.

It seems that Apple grows its fleet of self-driving test cars. In May, Apple got permits for 10 more self-driving vehicles, according to Mac Reports. The DMV also revealed that a second unnamed company had requested approval to begin driverless testing, but hasn't parted with any additional details. At this stage, Apple hasn't been authorized to test self-driving cars independent of human supervision; for that, the company will need to submit a separate permit to the DMV - something Waymo did last month. Tesla had slightly more drivers than Apple at 92, but fewer vehicles at 39. In addition to the 55 self-driving vehicles, Apple has 83 drivers who are permitted to test autonomous vehicles, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Uber previously operated a sizable fleet of self-driving cars in California, but its testing program has been suspended in the wake of a fatal crash in Arizona.

Seattle OKs taxing companies like Amazon to aid the homeless
The tax approved Monday is much smaller than the $500-per-head proposal that had been under consideration for many weeks. Head taxes are extremely rare in the USA and the ones in place are a fraction of Seattle's proposal.

Code-named "Project Titan", Apple's self-driving programme's fleet is reportedly made up of Lexus RX450h SUVs, each of which is fitted with huge racks of LIDAR and radar sensors as well as cameras. After starting with a secret operation to build a self-driving vehicle codenamed Project Titan in 2014, the project fell apart in two years.

Interestingly, only in June 2017, the head of Apple Tim cook for the first time confirmed that his company has a division that develops technology for Autonomous cars.
