Great internet debate: Do you hear 'Yanny' or 'Laurel'?

Some people who listen to this audio file hear one thing others hear something completely different. It's like it was put on the internet just to sow discord

Well buckle up, folks, because there's a new viral sensation causing divisions in offices and group texts everywhere: an audio clip of a computerized voice saying a word.

Twitter user and vlogger Cloe Feldman has kicked off the world's most frustrating debate, uploading an audio recording of a robot saying a word.

Chrissy Teigen says she heard "Laurel", so did Ellen Degeneres. And FYI, there are people who heard both Laurel and Yanny!

Remember that stupid black-and-blue dress that divided an entire nation several years ago? It's a recording of a computerized voice saying one of the two names. Or so they say, because no matter how much I mess with the audio I can hear only Laurel ... only Laurel.

Fresh from the blue slash gold dress, the grey slash pink shoes and every other possible "which one is it" meme on the Internet, comes this.

Swiss Tesla accident: crash may have sparked battery fire
Tesla said it was "deeply saddened" by the accident and was working with local authorities to establish the cause. It was unknown at the time of the accident whether the driver was operating on the Autopilot feature.

The clip is apparently a result of the McGurk effect, an illusion in which people hear something different from the actual sound due to a visual stimulus.

"I just asked my dad what he heard and he said "nothing" and my mom said "rural".

Chandrasekaran told The Verge that because the original recording is ambiguous - it's awful, remember? - your brain needs to fill what it thinks you should hear.

The acoustic frequency associated with Yanny is high, and with Laurel, low.
