Fast Growing Mega Black Hole Discovered by Researchers

"The heat radiation from the matter falling into the black hole, which is the light we see, is a few thousand times brighter than our own Milky Way galaxy", Christian Wolf, the lead researcher on the university's team of astronomers, wrote in an email to CNN.

The discovery of the new supermassive black hole was confirmed using the spectrograph on the ANU 2.3 meter telescope to split colors into spectral lines.

Wolf said if it was at the centre of the Milky Way, it would appear 10 times brighter than a full moon as a pin-point star that would nearly wash out all the stars in the sky. This even helped in detecting it as the light waves generated from that black hole get red-shifted at the time of their prolonged journey to the Earth.

To thoroughly describe this new quasar, Wolf and his colleagues combined visible and infrared light wave measurements from ANU's SkyMapper telescope with observations taken from several previous space surveys, including the massive new data release from the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite.

Wolf explained that fast-growing supermassive black holes can be used as beacons to study everything around them, because they're so bright that astronomers can spot the shadows of other objects passing in front of them.

The mammoth black hole also emanates vast amounts of radiated X-rays, which would probably "make life on Earth impossible", the astronomer pointed out.

Dubbed J215728.21-360215.1, the supermassive black hole was recently noticed by the before-mentioned Dr. Wolf and his colleagues.

Artist's rendering of the accretion disk of a supermassive black hole, located within a very distant quasar. "So this means it's far, far away in another galaxy and it will never drift and come over here", he said.

The studied black hole reportedly draws off light of large amounts thereby outshining the entire galaxy.

Instruments on very large ground-based telescopes being built over the next decade would be able to directly measure the expansion of the universe using these very bright black holes, Wolf said.

Now scientists are on the hunt for another black hole that might beat out this black hole's appetite and give them a glimpse into the inner workings of the universe only a few billion years after it formed. They are also useful as bright reference points for Global Positioning System and space navigation, and could provide the most sensitive measurements of the rate of expansion.
