White House seizes on claim of Federal Bureau of Investigation spy inside campaign

The meeting took place 100 days before Donald Trump was elected

"But the lead that they buried is - the word that you nearly never see in the Times [piece] ... is counterintelligence".

Mr Trump - as well as his attorney Rudy Guiliani and White House officials - have seized on the matter to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

In some sense, many analysts have said, he is right: Efforts by a hostile foreign power to influence a USA presidential election - with or without the assistance or knowledge of the winning candidate - may well be a scandal "bigger than Watergate!"

The tweet was likely in reference to a National Review report suggesting that Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson's since-retracted claim before the Senate Intelligence Committee past year that there was a "human source" connected with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the campaign.

Trump did not provide any evidence beyond the National Review story, which questions the FBI's official account of the investigation's origins and the timing of Simpson's retraction.

Trump marked the Mueller anniversary with a series of Twitter posts Thursday morning, reminding his 52 million followers of his belief that the investigation is a witch hunt.

Mr Trump also praised his administration, calling it "the most successful first 17 month Administration in USA history - by far!"

Chris Cuomo had Rudy Giuliani on New Day today, which became an epic 40 minute sparring match as they grilled each other over President Trump and the Russian Federation investigation. "Sorry to the Fake News Media and 'Haters, ' but that's the way it is!"

"If it is true that they put a spy - or two - inside the Trump campaign, it is not different from Watergate, except it is Democrats doing it to Republicans, rather than Republicans doing it to Democrats", Giuliani said. "This is not good for the American people, and the special counsel's office doesn't seem to have that, sort of, understanding that they're interfering with things that are much bigger than them or us". "It's about time to say, 'Enough, we've tortured this president enough'".
