Iran Relations: Decades of tension between the two countries

Parties Meet Amid Slim Hopes of Saving Iran Nuclear Deal

That seems to be the case today with Trump's policy on Iran - and it might justify his decision to link the Iranian nuclear file with all of the other files of concern to the USA with respect to the Islamic Republic, including its human rights abuses, its ballistic missile work, its support for terrorist organizations and the march of its Revolutionary Guard Corps across the Middle East.

Iran's supreme leader has threatened to pull his country out of the nuclear deal and resume enriching uranium if European countries do not promise to buy Iranian oil and to oppose all new United States sanctions against Tehran.

Tehran has threatened to restart its uranium enrichment program at an "industrial level" if the 2015 pact falls apart.

Political directors from Iran and the five global mediators (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and Germany) gathered for an extraordinary session of the Joint Commission in Vienna to discuss the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action following the United States' decision to withdraw from the deal.

The move has put the deal in "intensive care", the senior Iranian official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Iranian President Seyed Abbas Araghchi wants guarantees from Iran's partners.

Following the United States exit, Iran and the remaining parties have launched talks to save the accord.

Trump has complained that the Iran accord did not address Iran's ballistic missile program, its nuclear activities beyond 2025 or its role in conflicts in Yemen and Syria.

A senior European Union official said after the meeting that the bloc could not "give guarantees but we can create the necessary conditions for the Iranians to keep benefiting from the sanctions lifting under the JCPOA and to protect our interests and continue to develop legitimate business with Iran".

But officials at Friday's meeting said they can give NO guarantees at this point.

Russian delegate Mikhail Ulyanov struck a more upbeat note after the meeting, saying: "We have all chances to succeed, provided that we have is the political will". Iran's nuclear program was the sole focus of the worldwide community.

He added that the possibility of referring the matter back to the United Nations "was not discussed during this meeting".

Unusually for a meeting of the joint commission, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano was invited to brief the participants on the IAEA's work in Iran.

The sanctions will come into force on August 6, Efe news reported.

Hypothetically, there is still hope that the Europeans will be able to maintain this balance by launching a process to, as they say, protect the interests of European companies investing in Iran as part of their commitment to the nuclear deal.

The unnamed senior Iranian official rejected any attempt to link the JCPOA to other such issues.

"During the 40 years after the victory of the Islamic Revolution we did not initiate any aggression on any country and we are not looking for a territorial expansion", the Iranian top security official noted.

Since the US's pull out, the other signatories have since embarked on a diplomatic marathon to try to keep the agreement afloat.

The ayatollah made five demands of the European countries.

He also stated that any effort that would try and expose the corrupt government officials residing within the Iranian government will be met with support from the Trump administration.
