Lava threatens more wells at Hawaii geothermal plant

Lava from a fissure erupts on a residence in Leilani Estates, on Hawaii's Big Island, May 26, 2018 in Pahoa, Hawaii.

The USGS warned that magma was still flowing into the rift zone.

Before the lava reached the well, plant spokesman Mike Kaleikini told the news agency Hawaii News Now that there was no indication of the release of the poisonous gas hydrogen sulfide - the greatest fear should lava hit the wells.

Asked about safety hazards, he replied: "I think it's safe to say authorities have been concerned about the flow of lava onto the plant property since the eruption started".

Kilauea is the world's most active volcano and one of five on Hawaii's Big Island.

"It's this tide of lava that rises up and overflows itself on the edges and keeps rising and progressing forward", U.S. Geological Survey geologist Wendy Stovall told journalists on a conference call.

Thousands of residents have been impacted by evacuation orders as lava continues to flow, entering the ocean at three different points as of May 26.

More residents in some sections of the Leilani Estates neighbourhood were ordered to immediately evacuate shortly before 8 p.m.

Since the first outbreak happened more than three weeks ago, lava has claimed at least 92 structures in lower Puna (including 41 homes) and covered some 2,400 acres in lower Puna (or about 3.8 square miles). She's a former smoker, "so that's probably part of the problem, " she said.

"From one second to the next, no transition", she said.

NASA has released a new animated image that show Kilauea's lava flows at night.

According to Hawaii County Civil Defense, no hydrogen sulfide gas has been detected at the site.

An incredible timelapse video has emerged showing lava from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano invading a backyard as it now enters its fourth week of destructive eruptions.
